RM Gilbert Savannah Civil Rights Museum

The museum is situated within a historical district of the city and embarked on its development in multiple phases. Initially, the project involved the retrofitting of an existing building in this historic area, as part of a broader initiative to enhance the overall atmosphere and physical surroundings along M.L. King Jr. Blvd. GVSA played a pivotal role in designing the museum’s interior spaces, resulting in a diverse range of unique areas meant to serve as captivating settings for various exhibit displays.

In addition to the interior enhancements, exterior modifications were made to the building, including alterations to its entrance. A significant recent addition to the museum has further enriched its offerings. This new component was designed to host traveling exhibits and serve as a versatile space for community gatherings, earning recognition through awards for its outstanding design.

Notably, the integration of this award-winning addition was achieved in perfect harmony with the area’s historic regulations, ensuring that the museum complements and respects the historical character of its surroundings. Importantly, this expansion was seamlessly executed without causing any disruption to the museum’s initial phase, reflecting meticulous planning and execution.
