Senior Center Designed by GVSA Earns Accreditation
14 June 2022DeKalb, County, Georgia – The Lou Walker Senior Center has been recognized as a Nationally Accredited Senior Center of Excellence by the National Council on Aging’s National Institute of Senior Centers. Only 200 centers nationwide have earned the accreditation. While the Lou Walker Senior Center is the only one in DeKalb to earn the recognition, the county says it plans to work towards accreditation for all of DeKalb’s senior centers.
Goode Van Slyke Architecture designed the Senior Center, which opened in 2005. Its goal was to become a world-class center where people are valued, respected, and helped to age well. The Lithonia, Georgia facility features learning areas, a pool, a computer lab, a kitchen, and a hair salon featuring a barbershop and spa. The center offers dozens of classes including fitness, technology, martial arts, self-defense, dance, music, art, drama, public speaking, photography, and more.
Any citizen of DeKalb County who is aged 55 and over, and non-residents who participate in Silver Sneakers programs, are eligible to participate.
